Kapaa and Kauai Tours and Activities

There are lots of activities on Kauai with varied costs. Most tours seem to run around $100 dollars. Napali Coast Tours, Zip Line Tours, Kayak Tours, Site Seeing Tours, Movie tours, ATV Tours, Rafting Tours (Aqueduct System,) Scuba Diving Trips and Lessons. Kauai does have excellent diving and snorkeling. All of these cater to a broad range of individuals and most have minimum age requirements of at least 12 and some minimum weight. You need to have a reasonable level of fitness to manage these adventures. You can get discounts through the free tourist publications at the airport, hotel or activity centers island wide. Avoid purchasing from the first activity salesperson. Some activity vendors give discounts also so don’t hesitate to ask.

Dos and Don'ts

Kauai is a beautiful place with a diverse landscape. Opportunities abound for an incredible vacation. The amounts of rainfall can create many obstacles throughout the island. First, avoid swimming near river mouths at the beach after heavy rains. Your first hint at this will be the water clarity. Heavy rains bring the sediment down from the inner valleys and create a feeding environment for sharks. Sharks come into these areas after heavy rains because the river mouths can spill large amounts of fresh water along with dead animals that they feed on. There have been shark attacks in these areas. I don’t want to alarm you here but just want to fill you in on what the local behavior is. The judgment I use for my family is, if the visibility is not great than we go to another beach. The large amounts of water also can create slippery trails when hiking the Napali Coast or any of Kauai’s trail networks. Use common sense and avoid steep trails when wet. Wear appropriate hiking shoes and pack your supplies in and out and bring mosquito repellent. There are no poisonus snakes or animals on Kauai. Insects that can sting are wasps, yellow jackets and Honey Bees. We also have Centipedes but they are quite shy and have a tendency to hide in dark places and will scurry away when threatened.

The Majestic Ocean

Most visitors to Kauai are awed by the majesty of the ocean on Kauai. Kauai has many open ocean beaches that are exposed to heavy wind, wave and current activity. Expert swimmers should only perform open ocean swimming. You must exercise extreme caution and check with the lifeguard and adhere to posted warnings. During the Winter months strong swells and currents affect the North and West facing beaches of the island. The summer months are impacted by South Swells. Use judgment and ask your lodging host about the trade wind and swell direction. Trade winds are generally NE and can blow 15 to 25 miles an hour. These winds also can create strong currents and wind waves on the East and North shore. There are numerous man made swimming areas on the island. The South Shore has the beach park in front of Brenneckes Beach House at Poipu just outside of Koloa. There is also another at Salt Pond just past Hanapepe Town on the Southwest side of the Island. Kapaa has the largest at Lydgate Park with two large pools and Kamalani Playground and the Bridge, which are wonderful and free play destinations for children. A great book to get before you come on your vacation is Hidden Secrets of Kauai. This book gets down beyond the basic information and provides great insights into the garden isle.

Weather

The weather in Kauai is really quite incredible. Sun seekers should keep in mind that during the rainy season they can increase their odds for more sun if they travel west on the island. Kekaha is on the West side and is the driest. As you head east the terrain becomes more tropical due to the increase in amounts of rainfall. Mt. Waialaalae is noted to be the wettest place on Earth. Average rainfall is around 600 inches per year. These large amounts of water are what creates such a lush garden experience for most of the island.

Rental Cars

Rental Cars can be picked up at two locations. There is an airport location and another nearby about 2 miles away. There are regular shuttles that service all of these car rentals. Avis, Hertz, National, Alamo are all located within a short shuttle ride from the Airport.
